National Assembly

Former representative of Abia North Senatorial District, Chief Mao Ohuabunwa, has declared that only a people-oriented constitution anchored on the genuine yearnings and aspirations of the Nigerian ethnic nationalities will guarantee the country’s unity and continuity as an indivisible entity.

He, therefore, charged the National Assembly to transcend party affiliations and deliver an acceptable and workable constitution that would address all the knotty issues causing tension in the country.

Speaking with The Guardian yesterday in Umuahia, the Abia State capital, he argued that any attempt to amend the extant 1999 Constitution (as amended) without providing for devolution of power, fiscal autonomy, true federalism, as well as state or regional police would amount to attempts in futility.

Ohuabunwa, who noted that the 1999 Constitution was bedeviled by several flaws, further said that only its holistic review devoid of ethnic, religious or political sentiments could engender the articulation of an acceptable constitution for the country.
