It was another routine win for Manchester City who outclass Newcastle United 4-0 at St James’ Park in Sunday’s Premier League fixture.
Pep Guardiola had Joao Cancelo to thank as he provided an early assist for Ruben Dias before netting a stunning strike midway through the second half with Riyad Mahrez and Raheem Sterling getting the other two goals.
The win saw Man City take their tally to 44 points as they remain top in the league standing.
Whilst many expected a comfortable victory for the Man City, Newcastle did not help themselves by conceding a dreadful opener on 5th minute.
Oleksandr Zinchenko clipped a ball over the top of the defence and whilst Cancelo did well to reach the ball, he should not have registered an assist with centre-back Ciaran Clark allowing the ball to bounce over him, leaving Dias with the simple task of heading the ball in from less than six yards out.
In the 27th minute Man City doubled their lead as Cancelo ran through the heart of Newcastle’s midfield and unleashed a stunning right-footed effort into the top left corner of the goal.
City continued to dominate and were rewarded in the 63rd minute when Mahrez slotted in from less than ten yards out
And with four minutes left Sterling netted his 101st Premier League goal by tapping into an empty net.
In another Premier League fixture, Chelsea slipped up again in the title race after they were forced to a goalless draw at Wolverhampton Wanderers.
The Blues are now winless in their last two league games and occupy third spot on 38 points and are six points behind City.
Thomas Tuchel side were left “deeply disappointed” by the Premier League rejecting their request to postpone the Wolves trip, given their rising Covid-19 cases.
The Blues were without seven top stars at Molineux due to coronavirus, with Jorginho removed as a precaution, having returned one positive and then one negative test.
N’Golo Kante and Mateo Kovacic were pressed into premature service after long-term injuries then, with Chelsea only able to name four outfield players on their bench.
Kovacic only returned from Covid isolation on Friday, to add to almost two months of being sidelined after a hamstring strain.
