Manchester City cruised into the quarter-finals of this season’s UEFA Champions League with a 2-0 win over Borussia Monchengladbach in the second-leg round of 16 tie at the Etihad stadium on Tuesday.
Man City advanced into the last eight 4-0 on aggregate after winning the first-leg 2-0 in Germany.
Goals from Kevin de Bruyne and Ilkay Gundogan saw Man City easily progress into the draw for the quarter final.
De Bruyne opened scoring on 12 minutes as he let Riyad Mahrez’s pass from the right roll across his body before unleashing a thunderous left-footed shot which crashed in off the crossbar.
Just six minutes after De Bruyne’s opener, Gundogan made it 2-0 by calmly rolling past the Monchengladbach ‘keeper and into the bottom left corner after being played in by Phil Foden.
And in Spain, 13-time winners Real Madrid defeated Atalanta 3-1 to qualify for the quarter-finals 4-1 on aggregate.
Karim Benzema put Madrid 1-0 up in the 34th minute before Sergio Ramos scored from the penalty spot to make it 2-0.
With seven minute remaining in the game Atalanta pulled a goal back through Luis Muriel before Marco Asensio ended any hope of a comeback by netting Madrid’s third goal.
Action will continue in the Champions League on Wednesday when Bayern Munich will entertain Lazio while Atletico Madrid will be guests to Chelsea.
