Chelsea sealed their place in the quarter-finals of this season’s UEFA Champions League after defeating a lacklustre Atletico Madrid side 2-0, in Wednesday’s second-leg round of 16 tie at Stamford Bridge.

The Blues progressed 3-0 on aggregate after an Olivier Giroud strike sealed a 1-0 first-leg win.

After strong penalty appeals were waved away for Cesar Azpilicueta’s tug on Yannick Carrasco, Chelsea opened the scoring on 34 minutes through Hakim Ziyech who finished off Timo Werner’s pass from a swift counter.

In the 82nd minute it went from bad to worse for Atletico as Stefan Savic was shown a straight red card for elbowing Antonio Rudiger.

And in the 90th minute substitute Emerson Palmieri sealed the win as he made it 2-0 with his first touch after meeting a Christian Pulisic counter-attack at the back post.

At the Allianz Arena, Bayern Munich beat Lazio 2-1 to advance 6-2 on aggregate.

Robert Lewandowski put the Bundesliga giant 1-0 up from the penalty spot while Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting doubled their lead.

Marco Parolo got Lazio’s consolation goal with eight minutes remaining in the game.

Bayern Munich have now reached the quarter-finals of the UEFA Champions League for the 19th time, more than any other side in the competition’s history.

The eight teams for the quarter-finals draw on Friday are Chelsea, Manchester City, Liverpool, Bayern Munich, Borussia Dortmund, Real Madrid, PSG and FC Porto.
